How to Boycott GoDaddy

Censored, SOPA, PIPA

Last night I finalised the transfer of this domain name away from GoDaddy (to Gandi.net). This follows my decision last year to move my website from a data centre in Orlando, USA to servers in the United Kingdom.

The controversial American law SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) is to blame – GoDaddy not only endorses it, but is exempt from its effects due to the simple fact that it assisted in its creation. PIPA is another controversial act that GoDaddy endorses.

The SOPA law has too much power. In theory, if a person posts something on Facebook which is considered a copyright violation, the DNS servers of Facebook could legally be blocked. Effectively an entire site can be blocked because of the actions of a single user. The only people who benefit from the law are the greedy billionaire multi-nationals, who will happily sue over the download of a pirated £7 album.

We must not allow the internet to fall under the control of bureaucracy, and certainly not under the control of such a power-hungry government as the United States. I prefer not to have my website or domain hosted in a jurisdiction that can legally shut them down without appeal or notice, nor will I do business with any website endorsing such laws.

I encourage others who have domains with GoDaddy to transfer to another registrar. Read on to learn how…

Top 10 Belle and Sebastian Songs

belle1

Belle and Sebastian are an indie-pop band from Glasgow, UK. They are distinctive in so many ways that it seems pointless to attempt to put them all down in writing, but their early homemade/indie feel, whimsy and social realism mark their songs out amongst other artists.

I first heard a Belle and Sebastian song in 2007, while watching the film Juno. I downloaded the songs from its soundtrack and eventually collected almost their entire works. They are now my favourite band, so I would like to share with you what I consider to be some of their best work.

I’ve decided not to rank them by number, for the simple fact that I couldn’t decide on ranks for such equally brilliant songs.

An Update…

Yes, it has indeed been two months since I last added anything to my blog. The reasons include university work and a lack of internet in my parents house while I was home for Christmas (they cancelled their phone land-line and use only mobile phones now).

Not that my blog is hub of activity, or a popular choice on peoples bookmarks lists, but since I started the blog I’m determined not to let it decline into inactivity.

So my ‘business plan’ is changing. I think I’ll post shorter, almost Twitteresque blog posts more frequently, and occasionally slide in one of my massive essays or rants. That way, I’ll be making regular posts.

So I hope you’ll enjoy the new format, and I’ll be posting very soon. :)

Onlookers “refused to get involved” in Pregnant Woman Assault?

vicroad

Earlier this week, surbitonpeople.co.uk reported on the assault of a heavily pregnant woman close to where I live in Surbiton. They report that “many onlookers refused to get involved” as the woman was randomly approached by a man and punched repeatedly in the face and body while bending over to protect her unborn child. The attack only ended when an unidentified man came to the rescue, punching the attacker to the ground. Unfortunately, the attacker escaped.

The most shocking part of this whole incident is not the assault itself, but the fact that people witnessed a heavily pregnant woman being repeatedly punched, cradling her stomach, and refused to do anything.

Google+: Orkut 2.0 or serious Facebook rival?

Google Plus / Google+

Within the last few days, Google has unveiled a serious Facebook rival candidate, Google+. There is a lot of talk in the tech community about this new social network idea, especially with regards to Google service integration and a novel privacy system.

Not much has been said about the project at this point, and it appears only to be open to a select handful of the tech-world’s top dogs, but it has several features that have me excited.
